Sydney set for a season of style

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia
Sydney is set to celebrate a sparkling season dedicated to style as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Supported by the City of Sydney, it will be the fashion event of the year, hosting more than 50 shows and seminars from 14 to 19 May.

More than 30,000 national and international fashion experts, reviewers, buyers and consumers will attend Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia to preview designers’ 2019 resort collections.

More than 60 of Australia’s best and brightest designers will feature as part of the event, many of whom will showcase their designs on the runway at Carriageworks in Eveleigh.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Sydney’s proud to host the world’s top fashion designers, media, influencers and buyers for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

“We are supporting our talented home grown designers and businesses through tough economic times, and by hosting this event in our city, we’re giving some of the city’s best designers the opportunity to highlight their collections to the world,” the Lord Mayor said.

“This event carries the buzz and excitement of Fashion Week from the runways of Carriageworks to the heart of the city centre.”

Pitt Street Mall will be transformed into a fashion hub with screens live streaming the runway shows daily from 8am to 6pm on Monday 14 to Thursday 17 May. A TONI & GUY dry hair styling bar will offer complimentary hair styling sessions along with free giveaways by Grazia magazine and Vittoria Coffee.

The event’s Weekend Edition features fashion highlights from the week’s runway shows and offers fashion fans the chance to purchase exclusive Australian designer collections at The Stores on site.

Hosted at Carriageworks on 18 and 19 May, visitors can mingle with models backstage before the shows. Top fashion editors, style icons, illustrators and designers will run style sessions to share their trade secrets.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia is the first of two major annual fashion dates in Sydney – Vogue Fashion’s Night Out is slated for Thursday 6 September. The event is Australia’s biggest night time shopping experience and is hosted in 27 other cities around the world. It features beauty bars, champagne, catwalks and shopping throughout the city centre from 11am to 10pm.

More than 670 Sydney retailers are expected to take part with in-store events, fashion parades, live performances, incentives and celebrity guest appearances. The event attracts around 200,000 people and generates an economic impact of more than $30 million for the Sydney city centre retail sector.

The value of publicity for Australia’s fashion talent from the combined Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia events and Vogue Fashion’s Night Out is more than $130 million.

In conjunction with Fashion Week, and running through until 14 October, the Powerhouse Museum is hosting an exhibition that explores the history of men’s fashion and cultural influences over the centuries. Reigning Men – Fashion in Menswear, 1715–2015 features more than 130 garments by profile designers, including Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Jean Paul Gaultier and Yves Saint Laurent.
