Live music, performances and other entertainment will launch the City of Sydney’s Youth Week in the City festival, which is designed to attract young people aged 12 to 24 years of age from 14-21 April.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said it was a fabulous opportunity for Sydney’s young people from all backgrounds to get together and celebrate having a world of opportunity on their doorstep.
“One of the highlights of Youth Week for me is the Betty Makin Youth Awards, which celebrate the achievements of young leaders and their role in shaping the development and wellbeing of younger generations,” the Lord Mayor said.
“It’s an excellent opportunity to recognise the significant contribution made by young people in our city.”

Fernside Festival 20th Anniversary
Saturday 14 April, 12pm-5pm – Waterloo Skate ParkLive music with a DJ, performances and other entertainment will kick start the launch of the City’s Youth Week events and the 20th Anniversary of the Fernside Festival. Showcasing their talents, youngsters can take part in a scooter contest in addition to the Fernside Skate competition.
Betty Makin Youth Awards
Awards night Tuesday 17 April, attendance of the event by invitation onlyThe Betty Makin Youth awards are designed to recognise the importance of activism and service in our local communities, and by encouraging young people aged 12 to 24 of inner-Sydney to play their part in building stronger, healthier communities.

Discover Green Square on a bike
Friday 13 April & Friday 20 April, 4pm-7.30pm – starts at Sydney Town HallDiscover Green Square on a bike allows students to improve their skills and confidence riding a bike in the city. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about a number of community facilities that will be opened in 2018 and encourage students to get involved in their local community.
Youth in the City Hoops 3 on 3 Basketball Competition
– Wednesday 18 April, 12pm-4pm –Peter Forsyth Auditorium, Glebe
Police, local young people and the community will come together to train, play and compete in basketball games and share food to build relationships and celebrate Youth Week together. A shield and trophies will be awarded at the end of the day.
City community tennis coaches will host ‘Fast4’ mixed doubles tennis matches, with prizes and medals. Fast4 is a fun, shortened version of tennis with the first to four games winning the match. Wheelchair tennis is a fast-growing sport that follows traditional tennis except the ball is allowed to bounce twice.
This event includes DJ workshops, dance performances and art-based workshops and gives an opportunity for young people from all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to engage and participate in a safe and friendly environment.
A fashion parade with Australian designers who identify with various cultures and gender. This will be followed by a panel discussion about visual politics and cultural appropriation and explore the fine line between what is cultural appreciation and appropriation. The event will also screen of a documentary to discuss ideas about appearance, youth identity and public perception of young people.

Youngsters can take up basketball, futsal and volleyball as well as other non-sport activities and games. There’s something for everyone in this event, which will involve a number of engaging creative, cultural, recreational and educational activities.
The event will engage 40 students both local and international in a one-day social enterprise program to help young people to think creatively, build skills in critical thinking and communication.
Female street performers will entertain late night shoppers and visitors with a showcase of busking acts in the heart of Sydney’s shopping district.
