Australia's Finest Anglers Compete at Lake Proserpine

The Whitsundays will be hosting the Australian Fishing Championships from 7 November 2016 at Lake Proserpine, where Australia's finest anglers will compete against the mighty barramundi.

The Australian Fishing Championships Series XIII is the absolute pinnacle of tournament fishing in Australia, and the opening Round of the Championships at Proserpine will be televised and promoted across Australia.

The event is a collaboration between the Whitsundays, Mackay and Fraser Coast regions, with Tourism Whitsundays hosting the Championship in Proserpine.

Lake Proserpine, also known as Peter Faust Dam, is home to more barramundi over one metre in size than any other impoundment in Australia.

Tourism Whitsundays CEO, Craig Turner, believes the event will help grow recreational fishing tourism across the Whitsundays.

“Fishing in the Whitsundays is a popular recreational experience for visitors, whether near the Great Barrier Reef, around the islands, or fishing for barramundi at Lake Proserpine,” he said.

“Promoting tourism experiences based around fishing is an opportunity to highlight the natural environment of the Whitsundays, and the diversity on offer.”

“Fishing is one of those great Queensland pastimes, and many visitors to the Whitsundays are planning to throw a line in to the river or sea during their stay.”

Tourism Australia has also recognised the increasing popularity of fishing for international visitors to Australia, and has adopted fishing as a core pillar of their Coastal & Aquatics Campaign.

The Australian Fishing Championships will be a fantastic opportunity for the Whitsundays to showcase the variety of fishing spots in the region, to visitors from Australia and overseas.
