Timing Helps Travel Faster In Ha Noi Vietnam

Traffic in the capital city has improved thanks to the adjustment of school and working hours earlier this year, according to a survey revealed Aug 23.

The survey, completed by Ha Noi Transport Department and the Ministry of Transport's Strategy Institute at a number of major traffic points in Ha Noi, was pointed out at the meeting between the department representatives and local police to review the city's traffic problems.

Traffic flow into the city is now 15 minutes faster than it was eight months ago, said the department.

Earlier this year, to reduce the number of traffic jams, the Ha Noi Government directed students at higher education, high school, and vocational training levels to start their school day before 7:00am and end it at no later than 7:00pm.

Previously, these students began school at 7:00am or 7:30am and finished around 5:30pm.

The survey found that traffic flow at several major points had improved during rush hour periods (7.30-9.30am and 4.30-7.00pm) while the number of vehicles on the roads during these hours had reduced from 5-15 per cent.

The survey also said that the average travelling time had now reduced by 10-15 minutes while traffic accidents in the city had also declined.

Furthermore, the time adjustments had helped public buses to operate better with more commuters and less missed journeys.

Specifically, public buses served nearly 1.9 million turns in the first six months of the year, as much as 99 per cent of the target figure. The number of uncaught turns had also reduced by 10 per cent compared to the same term last year.

After the meeting, the department urged Ha Noi to continue finding solutions to reduce traffic jams such as limiting the number of trucks, tourist buses and taxis on the road during several daytime periods, and install more light bridges to ease congestion in the city.
