Kickstart Your Winter When the Country Comes to the City at Pyrmont

Pyrmont Festival
Kickstart your winter indulgence with a day of sipping wines by Sydney Harbour at the Pyrmont Festival’s ‘Mudgee Wines in Pirrama Park’ on Sunday 20 May 2012.

The event is a delicious opportunity to taste your way around 120 different wines from 20 of the Mudgee Region's top winemakers. To add to the sensory feast, browse art in the 6th Annual Pyrmont Art Prize, a community event featuring over 300 pieces by budding and established artists. The day also serves up gourmet goodies from Mudgee’s fine food producers, live music, kids entertainment and food stalls.

As one of Sydney’s newest food and wine fairs, it is also the biggest event in the Pyrmont Festival of Wine, Food and Art’s program, from 18-27 May.

Admission to the day is free from 11am-5pm. Mudgee wine tasting packages including tasting tokens with a souvenir glass start at just $20 and can be purchased on the day. Meet the friendly winemakers from newcomers Walter Wines, Quilty and Short Sheep Wines, alongside established favourites like Lowe Wine, Huntington Estate, Robert Stein Winery and High Valley Wine & Cheese Company.

Pyrmont Festival
This year’s Pyrmont Art Prize theme is ‘Small is Beautiful’ and will feature 12x12 canvases. Official guest speakers and prominent judges have been invited and a People’s Choice Award will be presented from the attending public. All artists are invited to enter by 14 May with many prizes up for grabs including the first prize of $1,000 cash and an exhibition at the Tap Gallery in Pyrmont. For the first time this year the Prize promotes art for children as six local primary schools participate in a separate exhibition to be shown in the children’s playground at Pirrama Park.

Pirrama Park is a stunning new waterfront venue at the end of Harris Street in Pyrmont. A former Water Police site it was transformed by the City of Sydney to offer grasslands, tree-lined pathways, picnic areas and views over Blackwattle Bay.

Other ‘Mudgee Wines in Pirrama Park’ highlights:
  • My Kitchen Rules - if you are a home-cook hero, meet the crew from ‘My Kitchen Rules’ who will be coming down to seek out contestants for their next TV series
  • Art - have your photo taken by North Sullivan for the ‘Pyrmont Faces’ Public Art Project. And view ‘Paintings of Pyrmont’, an exhibition by Jane Bennett
  • Cycle to the event - the quickest way to get to the Park is to cycle, but come in style as there is a ‘Tour de Pyrmont’ best dressed bike and rider competition being judged by Nell Schofield. Ample free bike parking will be provided and you can download  route maps from the Festival website
  • Win a Mudgee holiday and Mudgee wine - mixed dozens of Mudgee wine will be given away plus a ‘Luxurious Sensory Escape Weekend’ in Mudgee valued at over $1,000
The Pyrmont Festival is a collaboration between the Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce, the City of Sydney and the Mudgee Wine Region industry, bringing country flavours to the city.
