2011 Travellers’ Choice Food And Wine Destinations Awards

70 Destinations Recognized Worldwide Based on Opinions of Millions of Travellers

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel web site, has announced the winners of its 2011 Travellers’ Choice Food and Wine Destinations awards. Seventy outstanding destinations across the world have been honoured in the inaugural awards, with Top 10 lists named for the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Central and South America, South Pacific, and India.

TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice winners are based on the millions of real and unbiased reviews and opinions from travellers around the world. The Travelers’ Choice Food and Wine Destinations award winners were determined based on the most highly rated food and wine destinations by travellers in TripAdvisor reviews.

“TripAdvisor’s community of millions have helped us determine award-winning destinations for a topic near and dear to travelers’ hearts and stomachs,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “The Travelers’ Choice Food and Wine award winners are remarkable spots around the world that satisfy all tastes.”

The major winners for each of the regions in the world for 2011 are -
Asia- Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok is famous for its world-class restaurant and nightclub scene. From familiar favourites like pad thai to more exotic delicacies like fried insects, Bangkok offers a variety of cuisines to tempt any palate. You can also taste world-class Thai beers, such as Singha and Chang

Europe- Florence, Italy
It must seem funny to Florentines that locally grown food is trendy, because they’ve been eating it for centuries. The ingredients may be simple—extra-virgin olive oil, fava beans, pecorino romano cheese, wild game, etc.—but you won’t have a bad meal here. Tuscan wines (e.g., Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and the dessert wine Vin Santo) are equally excellent.

Canada- Niagra-on-the-Lake, Ontario
Located on the south shore of Lake Ontario, charming Niagara-on-the-Lake is known for its acclaimed Shaw Festival and outstanding wineries. The beautiful countryside is the perfect environment for growing grapes, making it Canada’s premier wine region. Bike, drive or take a trolley to award-winning wineries, including the Inniskillin, famous for its sparkling ice wine. Niagara Falls, just down the road, has many restaurant options. (We hear there's also some sort of waterfall there.)

Central & South America- Buenos Aires, Argentina
Meat, meat and more meat are on the menu in Buenos Aires. Argentinean beef is world-famous, and local chefs take advantage of it in many delicious ways. Visit a parrilla restaurant for grilled steaks and, if you’re daring, kidneys, intestines and morcilla (blood sausage). Foodies flock to the city’s many closed-door restaurants, where chefs craft unique menus for small, select groups of diners

India- Mumbai (Bombay), India
It takes a robust palate to brave the spicy cuisine of Mumbai, but you’ll find flavour combinations here you can’t taste anywhere else in the world. Vegetables and nuts are integral to most dishes, and coconut features heavily in the regional cuisine. Vegetarian food abounds and seafood is readily available for those craving a taste of the sea.

South Pacific- Melbourne, Australia
One could dine around the world without leaving Melbourne. Whether you’re looking for the best contemporary Australian cuisine, old-school Greek food or authentic Thai, you can find it right here. And let’s not forget the wine. Restaurants feature Australia’s finest vintages, but why not get up-close and personal with the grapes? Many top wineries are within an easy drive of the city.

USA – New Orleans, Louisana
Breakfast in New Orleans is relatively easy: go for beignets and chicory coffee. For lunch and dinner, though, you’ll have to choose from an almost bewildering array of options, from Cajun or Creole specialties to BBQ to some of the best French food you can find outside France
